Jo Wildy book: Mind & Membrain
Kew osteopath, Jo Wildy, has published Mind & Membrain. The book which gives a fresh look at the effect of head injuries on mental health
In recent years, countless headlines have shown that sports people, such as rugby players, who have received numerous head traumas can become seriously ill later in life.
In her debut publication, Jo Wildy calls upon 30 years of osteopathic experience to offer an explanation of how an impact on the skull can affect the membrane that houses the brain. This can lead to mood disorders and brain diseases such as dementia.
Called the dura mater, or ‘tough mother’ in Latin, this overlooked membrane system that enfolds the brain and the spine can become distorted in shape as a consequence of physical trauma to the skull. This change of shape alters the physical environment of the brain hampering the brain’s ability to regulate itself.
With precise and gentle cradling of the head, an osteopath can feel and work with the dural membrane system to restore normal environmental conditions for the brain to function properly. Through case studies of her patients, the author shows how the psychological symptoms they presented with can be alleviated through this technique of physically treating the membrane.
