Painting and re-interpreting the work of other artists has been practised over centuries by students and, indeed, the Masters themselves. Landseer painted from Rubens, Sargent from Velasquez and Van Gogh, Picasso and Matisse were all admirers of Delacroix and copied him extensively.
Now five local artists – Sarah Dickinson, Michelle Hawes, Jill Hunt, Anne Tutton and Jane James – are following in their footsteps with their A New Expression exhibition. During lockdown, unable to physically access much-loved galleries, the artists followed an online course with renowned artist Sara Lee Roberts, based upon the ideas in her book Painting and Re-interpreting the Masters.
They studied the works of various artists, each offering a different focus of learning, be it colour, perspective, tone or mark making. The aim was always to retain a sensitivity and feeling for the original work whilst creating a personal re-interpretation of their own.
The exhibition, which is in conjunction with the Friends of St Mary’s Church Barnes, aims to show the work created through their individual artistic journeys, taking the viewer from first sketches to the finished pieces.
A fascinating show that is well worth a visit!
