Richmond Theatre, located on Little Green in Richmond, London, is one of the UK’s most historic playhouses. Designed by the renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, it opened on 18 September 1899 with a performance of As You Like It. Built in the Edwardian style, it is celebrated for its ornate interior, gilded decoration, and intimate auditorium, which has attracted theatre lovers for over a century. During the 20th century, Richmond Theatre became a popular try-out venue for West End productions, allowing shows to be refined before moving to London’s main stages. Many leading actors, from Ralph Richardson to Judi Dench, have performed there. The building survived periods of decline, most notably a threatened demolition in the 1960s, but was saved through strong local campaigning. Today, managed by the Ambassador Theatre Group, it continues to host touring plays, musicals, comedy, and opera, preserving its legacy as a cultural landmark.
