There is something intriguing about visiting an artist in their own home or studio. It is an insight into their surroundings, how they like to work, the tools they use and what gives them inspiration. And Putney Artists Open House not only gives you the chance to delve into their world, but also the opportunity to buy direct, missing out the middleman gallery fees and possibly getting yourself a bargain.
There are around 40 artists who will open the doors to their creative space, enabling you to chat them in a relaxed setting and find out more about their work.
Among those taking part is Ken Cox (1), who subverts the form of vintage American comic books in collaged screenprints, using the themes of love, loss, time and identity. Ken studied at the Royal College of Art and has exhibited at many galleries as well as lecturing in design and drawing.
Elieen St Julian-Bown’s work (2) is mainly autobiographical, often drawing on her years as a commuter and reflecting on other places she has travelled to, both near and far.
A regular at the Putney Artists Open House, Alan Smart (3) left advertising to study painting in St Ives in the 1960s. He has had shows in both London and St Ives, including at the Chelsea Art Society, Mall Galleries and the Affordable Art Fair.
Bruce St Julian-Bown (4) ran an ad agency for many years, directing top photographers of the day. He takes his inspiration from celebrated photojournalist, Sebastiao Salgado, communicating the emotional power of landscapes in his photography.
