The Richmond resident and painter James Cowan is having an exhibition of his work at the Riverside Gallery at the Old Town Hall from 7th March to the 18th April 2020.
He will be showing a selection of his watercolours and prints done over the past few years that features aspects of two famous cities.The exhibition, entitled ‘A Series of Triptychs ‘ is composed of paintings and prints inspired by visits to New York and St Petersburg.
The subject matter varies from geometric shadows cast by sunlight on New York fire escapes, to the expressively carved horses of the Central Park Carousel and the reflections in windows of the traffic and streets of St Petersburg. The triptych format, originally used in religious altarpieces, is here used to emphasis the horizontal format of the work and as a means of extending the narrative of the subject. Painted in both vibrant and subdued colours and shown together with black and white etchings, the show presents a visual representation of two contrasting cities.
