Dog Days: great dog walks this summer
Take some cool walks along the river with your dog
Long summer days – if not too hot, like recently! – are made for exploring with your dog and our corner of South West London has some of the best riverside walks in the capital. Whether your dog enjoys a cooling paddle in the Thames, shady woodland or a well-earned café stop, these four routes are perfect for a family walk.
Richmond Riverside to Ham House
‘It’s hard to believe you’re still in London’
From Richmond Bridge, follow the Thames Path towards Petersham Meadows, where wide open grassland meets the river. Dogs can cool their paws at several gentle access points along the Thames, while families can enjoy uninterrupted views across the meadows. Continue to Petersham Nurseries for a coffee in the garden café before walking on to Ham House and returning via the riverside. It feels wonderfully rural, despite being just minutes from Richmond town centre.
Putney Riverside to Putney
Lower Common
‘River views, open space and plenty of places to pause – the perfect summer combination’
Start at Putney Bridge and follow the Thames Path west towards Leader’s Gardens. There are a few great pubs at the start of the walk. Turn inland to Putney Lower Common. The riverside offers plenty of opportunities for a drink or paddle, while the Common’s shady trees make it ideal for summer walks.
The Two Bridges
‘A riverside walk that’s as relaxing for owners as it is for dogs’
Start on Kew Green and head across Kew Bridge. Follow the Thames path to Strand-on-the-Green. There are a couple of great pubs along the river on this side to stop for a pint or two. Carry on towards Chiswick Bridge, which is part way on the road. Cross the bridge and, at the far end, go down the steps. Continue along the towpath back towards Kew Green. There are steps on this side, leading down to the river shore, where dogs can enjoy a splash in the river where it’s safe to do so.
Barnes Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge
‘One of London’s hidden corners for nature lovers’
Beginning at Barnes Bridge, follow the river in the direction of Hammersmith. On the way, you’ll see the Leg O’ Mutton Nature Reserve, which offers peaceful walking and shaded tracks where wildlife is abundant. You’ll need to keep your dog on a lead here. Continue your walk along the river to Castelnau and Hammersmith Bridge, where there are a few good pubs to take a rest.
Remember to keep your dog cool during day walks. The recent very hot weather can really affect their wellbeing, so try to keep walks to early morning or the evening. Make sure to take water (if they can’t drink from the river or don’t like to) and stick to shade where possible.
