Not only recognised as one of the Nobel and multiple Pulitzer prize winning author, Eugene O’Neill’s greatest works, Long Day’s Journey into Night is also revered as an iconic piece of American literature. It tells the story of one family’s voyage of discovery over the course of a day in August, 1912, when James Tyrone, a successful immigrant Irish actor, has retreated with his wife and sons to their Connecticut seaside home. O’Neill himself called the play, which was deeply autobiographical, a work of ‘old sorrow, written in tears and blood…’ and he refused to have it staged or even published during his lifetime.
