East Twickenham was known as the ‘Belgian Village on the Thames’ and a memorial, remembering the 6,000 Belgian refugees who came in the 1st World War, has been unveiled in Warren Gardens – the spot where army sentries guarded the Pelabon Munitions Works. One of the workshops later became Richmond Ice Rink before becoming luxury flats.
