The Scottish colourist Alison McWhirter’s fourth solo show at The Russell Gallery (8 Sept – 1 Oct) is based on the poem by Dylan Thomas ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower’.
Alison has painted 69 oils of flowers, abstracts, landscapes and abstracted nudes – a show full of colour and joy.
Alison writes: ‘These paintings explore themes present in the poem, where the rich visual imagery examines nature, mortality and, moreover, love. There is an unstoppable energy, so powerful in the poem in its description of the forces in nature, with love being at the very root of everything.
‘For me this force, this energy, described in the poem, connects with my own creative process, the endless desire to paint, that drives me forward through life and sustains me. I hope to describe this inexplicable language through the vivid colours and deep layers and textures in my paintings.’
