I caught up with Sarah Olney MP to chat about how she feels the coming months will be for her constituents
‘There is still so much uncertainty, despite shops and businesses going back the new ‘normal’, and that is worrying for people. There are many sectors, such as the travel industry and hospitality, which still have an unclear future at the moment.’
But, having spent time talking to small, independent traders around our local high streets, she believes there are many positives: ‘There are many local traders for whom business has been good during lockdown. People are walking to their local shops and, with a revival in cooking, businesses such as butchers have been doing well.’
She feels schools are well set up for the start of the Autumn term: ‘Teachers are desperate to get their students back into schools – they have missed their pupils. They are all working hard, particularly for those pupils who have exams next year.’
Her main concern is that the track and trace system hasn’t been as widespread as it could have been and believes there should be a public enquiry into how this has been handled by the government. ‘It’s not too late, we can help to stop the spread of the disease if we act now.’
