Cambridge Park in East Twickenham lies on the C17th Twickenham Meadows and is named after Richard Own Cambridge, once described by Horace Walpole as ‘Cambridge the Everything’ thanks to his diverse talents. Local writer, Jonathan Crofts, charts this area of Richmond in his book Meadows, Mansions and Munitions: Stories and Lives of Cambridge Park’, with its rich and varied history, starting as a rural playground for Londoners, before becoming an affluent riverside suburb centuries later. In the WW1 it was known as ‘Belgium-on-Thames’ thanks to the numerous Belgian refugees who lived in the area and worked in the local munitions factory.
