A new book by local Kew author, Julian Fox, tells an alternative version of what life could have been like for Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh is one of the world’s most renowned painters, known for famous works such as Sunflowers and Daubigny’s Garden. But what if he had struggled with his work and decided to find a different life, encouraged by his fellow artist, Paul Gauguin? A life as a (not very good) composer.
Julian Fox’s intriguing novel begins during Vincent’s time in Southern France and follows the artist through his mental breakdown, the cutting off of his ear and his search for meaning in his life.
Fox started the book as a short story in the late 1990s but over the years it developed into a full length novel: ‘I’ve read more than 50 books on van Gogh. The is so much written about him but parts of his life still remain a mystery. Out of all the great artists he was the most innovative and had the most colourful private life.’
