20mph making a small difference
Annoying though it is to drive at 20mph, it really does seem to be making a (small) difference. The number of road collisions – and therefore injuries – has decreased from on average 338 to 301. The 20mph is now in place on 97% of Richmond’s road and the survey was carried out at 152 locations across the borough. However, the reduction in average speeds is 2.6mph on most roads and by 4.4mph on roads where the highest speeds were recorded. Not particularly significant results, but still making a difference. Interestingly, it seems that travelling the length of Kew Road, for instance, at 20 rather than 30mph, makes the journey only 14 seconds longer.
