World Wars, the Cold War, counter-terrorism and double agents. One spy – Carl Muller – was caught when his secret message to Germany – written in lemon juice, no less, was revealed when a warm iron was passed over the letter which was addressed to a known German ‘cover address’. The shrivelled lemons, used as evidence in the court case, are on display. Muller was convicted and executed by firing squad at the Tower of London.
Opening on April 5, 2025, “MI5: Official Secrets” at The National Archives in Kew offers an unprecedented look into the UK’s domestic intelligence agency. This free exhibition, running until September 28, 2025, requires no booking and is suitable for visitors aged eight and above.
The exhibition traces MI5’s evolution from its inception before World War I to its current role in counterterrorism. Visitors will encounter original case files, photographs, and documents, alongside authentic espionage equipment used over the past 115 years. Highlights include insights into MI5’s efforts against fascism during World War II, the intrigue of Cold War espionage, and contemporary challenges in national security.
Exclusive video interviews with former MI5 directors general and experts like Professor Christopher Andrew and Baroness May provide personal perspectives on the agency’s history and operations. Sir Ken McCallum, MI5’s current Director General, emphasizes the agency’s commitment to transparency, stating, “While much of our work must remain secret, this exhibition reflects our ongoing commitment to being open wherever we can.”
