Teddington’s Landmark Arts Centre has been forced to launch an emergency community funding appeal following its abrupt closure last month and cancellation of events because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The charity, which receives no core external funding and was planning to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, has taken drastic steps to reduce outgoings to a minimum by furloughing all but one staff member. However, with no income generated from its programme of events the centre faces permanent closure by the end of May.
We are so lucky to have arts centres locally such as the Landmark. They hold wonderful arts Fairs in both and their Christmas Fair is always a treat to visit to find unusual gifts.
Says the Landmark Chair of Trustees, Martin Nicholds: ‘Along with everyone in the UK [the virus]is having a profound impact on us. With no income we will eventually reach a point where our reserves are exhausted and we have to shut up shop. We estimate this point will be reached in less than two months.’
The Landmark, which has become a vital community hub with its reputation for providing a diverse range of arts events for all – from live music, workshops, arts fairs, workshops, classes, comedy and three choirs, was planning a packed programme of events to celebrate its 25th anniversary this summer. Most recently the centre saw sell-out performances from singers, Clare Teal, Barbara Dickson, John Illsley of Dire Straits and comedian, Simon Brodkin. A-Ha famously recorded the pop-video for hit ‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’ there.
Nicholds adds: ‘We certainly don’t want to commemorate our anniversary by closing down and are determined to keep The Landmark going so we can be here for the community when this crisis is over; that’s why we’re launching an appeal.’
